How did Roland get the suitcase?

Since the front guy at the hairdresser's said Roland could pick up the briefcase (probably filled with illegal diamonds) the next day, and that next day the guy and the others at the storefront were arrested, how did Roland get the briefcase? Surely it would have been confiscated by the police as evidence?

He acted like he had it though...that was odd.

I assumed he did. I wonder if there's an inbetween story - how he came to be a dealer in jewellery in Umbrellas. Perhaps the character kept the diamonds, and in the course of selling them established himself as a dealer.

Actually, no, they weren't arrested "the next day".

The story takes place over parts of 3 days: the day when Roland meets all of the others (Cecile & her mother, Lola, and the barber), then the next day is Cecile's birthday, then the day after that is the day of Roland's departure and when we see the arrest.

We never see Roland getting the case during the middle day, but it's not unreasonable to think that he did since that was what had been planned.

Quite the opposite, that briefcase almost certainly did *not* contain any diamonds. It figured to contain money (or whatever was intended to pay for the diamonds). The briefcase that Roland was to bring back is the one that figured to be "full of diamonds".

South Africa has long been far and away the world's largest diamond producing (mining) nation. Smuggling diamonds from France *into* South Africa doesn't make any kind of sense. Smuggling diamonds *out* of South Africa is far more likely.
