Sailor and young girl.......what?

I know it was 50 years ago, but an American sailor with a 14 yr old girl - what was the director's intention? I can't believe things were as free and easy even then, even in France. I know young Cecile's crush on him was part of the mirroring of older Cecile, but at the Fairground, surely that would have raised concerns, as they obviously could not be mistaken for father and daughter.

Awkward... though he does say she reminds him of his sister. Even more awkward when her mom was basically pimping her out to Roland. Of course it's actually sicker of modern society to expect women to wait until they've got wrinkles (and slept with a a few dozen men) to wed.

It is an interesting point. I think most modern viewers are shocked by the fairground scene. But French viewers were much less shocked in 1961 : it was legal for a girl, then, to marry at 15; so I presume it was considered as quite normal to be wooed at 14.

They did absolutely nothing wrong, or remotely sexual. So what is the problem here?

It was only life, liberty, and beauty. Please stop seeing sins everywhere.
