mesmerising

This 'out-of -character' work of Melville's is, to me, his most remarkable, And Belmondo, wow, I don't even know how to describe him. Forget "breathless", this is Belmondo's real masterpiece. His ax broke my heart open by mistake. A pity though this film was one-of-a-kind for both Melville and Belmondo.

Just below his "Le Silence de la Mer" IMHO.

Ingenious casting, especially that of Belmondo opposite Riva. He is extremely watchable in this film. And VERY good.

I am disappointed with IMDb posters' ratings. It is at the very least a 9/10. Ah well...

I know what you mean. I think some people on imdb far too often underrate great movies because they are too "slow" or "quiet"...even though those are more often than not the best movies...sigh.

It was inevitable that there would be, in the history of cinema, at least one film about theology, but far from likely that most people would find the subject appealing for an entertainment.

This marks the third time I’ve felt jealousy in my life, the first seeing Goya in a crowd and having to share; the second reading Patrick White alone and having no one to share it with; and now you seeing this movie.
How was it?
