Melville a communist?

One of the reviewers seems to believe that Melville was a communist, or at least left-leaning. This is simply untrue: he had a lot of grief with communist-controlled film unions early in his career, and this made him resolve to work outside the system as much as he could. He was one of the great individualists in the French film history.

He described himself as "a right-wing anarchist"

He was very right-wing, not only a Gaullist, but a reactionary. Just saw a Web show on him (in French) from people who you knew him (except for the anchor).

The show made me want to see the movie (I knew most of the other Melville's movie).
