The Last Sunset and Le Samourai

Something no one has touched on but that I noticed right away is how similar the endings of the two films are (I won't say in case people haven't seen the film). I wonder when Melville was making his masterpiece a) if he had seen Aldrich's film, and b) if he was paying homage to Aldrich's work. Btw, I loved both films: Aldrich's was 9/10 for me while Melville's was 10/10 IMHO.
