Second new wave film I've seen where a car flies off the road

This and Il Sorpasso both ended somewhat abruptly with cars being driven off the road, over a cliff/bridge, resulting in a main character(s) death. In both instances, I found this happening to be rather cheap, like the writers didn't know how to end their film so they went with shock over sense. Yes, Catherine was impulsive, but she loved life as in being alive, breathing, eating, drinking, having conversation with friends. And it's reasonable to say if she didn't crash then she'd eventually die of some fancy French STD. So back to my main point, did many New Wave films end with similar "shock factor" finales?
