How far are we away from this happening again?

My husband and I watched this again tonight, and I was appalled at some of the reasoning echoed in the debates we're hearing today. Toss the Constitution aside and vote in a "strongman" who'll take care of all the nation's problems.

We don't learn very much from history, do we?

When evil is viewed as good, righteousness is viewed as evil.

'History is written by the victor'

'Don't try to be a great man, let history decide wether you were great or not'

You don't lern much from books peeriod.

Keep in it real since 1972! And proud of it!!!!

Not awfully far IMO. When you look at the Reichstag Fire Decree of 1933, which suspended parts of the German Constitution for national security with those of the Republican USA PATRIOT Act of 2002 which severely undercut portions of the US Constitution, you'll see some parallels. The principle is trading liberty for security.

We how have a candidate for President that is following the path of singling out ALL members of a small (< 2 percent of the US population) religious group and vilifying ALL of them for the actions of a very few. Muslims in the US make up a little over 1 percent of the population. Jews in Germany in the 1930's made up less than 1 percent. What is really sad are all of the Americans buying into this platform of hatred. I see beyond A or B so I'm not a Clinton supporter. I support Libertarian Gary Johnson.

We don't learn very much from history, do we?

Sadly, no. We then repeat it. I've never watched the entire film, am watching it now. The way it is headed has another similarity- apathy. A German Pastor named Martin Niemoller wrote a piece called "First they came" in which he detailed how apathy kept anyone from doing anything when the government came for various groups. By the end there was no one left to speak for him when the government came for him. Niemoller was pro-Hitler but as he saw how things went he opposed it and was imprisoned.

Excellent answer, and thought provoking question from the OP.

The Patriot Act scared me, but most Americans barely took notice. And now, with an arrogant, incompetent sociopath running for office, we are seeing shades of 1933.

reply

I realize several years have passed but, when you call the Patriot Act “Republican,” you lose all credibility for everything else you say. It passed 98-1 in the Senate which was almost equally split between the parties. Thus Democrats voted it into law by a 48-1 vote. It was also repeatedly reauthorized and extended during the Obama Administration including some of the most criticized surveillance portions. Let’s face it, the erosion and destruction of personal liberty in America has been universally across party lines.

Here's a non-hysterical discussion between two history professors about the comparisons between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler - what parallels are legit, and which ones that don't hold water.

Some of it is truly ominous. It's hard to watch a movie like this if you're paying any attention to modern political rhetoric. Way way way too close for comfort.

Thanks for posting that. I agree with your assessment. I just finished listening to it and the main problem I have is that the three people speaking were all of one political view (modern liberals). A proper journalist should have a broader spectrum on the panel as far as point of view goes for a discussion of this nature.

They (especially the male) seemed to focus on the Republican party far more than historical parallels.

The #1 reason for the events in Germany was a *TOTAL* collapse of their economy. No one had anything and life was miserable until an Austrian painter turned up and brought their nation back to a level of some economic normality. That was why he was so popular and why very few protested against the evil his regime did before the war and during it.

The USA is lightyears away from such economic hardship, so the chances of US turning to National Socialism are slim to none.

"The USA is lightyears away from such economic hardship"

Now what do you say in 2020?

reply

Not even close. Germany was totally collapsed. Even the rich people were nearly penniless, and their currency was worth less than toilet paper. So they emigrated to USA by the masses to restart life.

reply

This should have happened to the Trump administration. Traitors!

reply

Trump was a great President, better than this senile, demented puppet in there now.
