William Shatner absolutely steals this film.

With his charisma , good looks and intensity.

This is intended as a joke, right?

Or maybe the OP's just a sucker for boys in uniform. 

Shatner's portrayal of Captain Byers was quite good, but not good enough to get him put away for thiefing any time soon I'd say.

Ha! Big goof.

It's funny to think of Shatner (who was perfectly serviceable and quite charming in this) among such legendary heavyweights. I'd love to ask him his impressions of Tracy and Clift and Garland and Lancaster ...

Lucky guy.

He did a great job in all seriousness. And he was important in basically telling Tracy that his gal dumped him.

He was also vital to making sure Judge Haywood knew the best places to eat. 

He could access a much more naturalistic, low-key acting style in those days. Sure, he could be hyper-dramatic back then, too (his Twilight Zone episodes were from pretty much this same time), but I think over the years he forgot how to do low-key.

The best performance IMO is from Clift, but Shatner is always fun to watch.

Spoken as a loyal "Star Trek" fan...BTW, is it true? was he in this movie?
