Has anyone read the book by Henry James? "The Turn of the Screw".

Have not read the book in decades. It is more frightening than the movie.

reply

I find the book to be rather slow. The film however, is brilliant.

I own the book as part of a collection by Henry James, but haven't read it.

Thanks, that's useful.

I just finished it - I found it truly beyond it's time and highly enjoyable, but thought the abrupt ending hurt it overall. I am learning that the ambiguity seems to be intentional, and no doubt our generation has much different "needs" for story endings.

reply

Yes, ambiguity is what makes it spooky. I am a Boomer. I read. When I read, I have movies going on in my head. Have tried to pass this on to my grandchildren. Life is ambiguous, not a video game.

reply

I listened to it. There's an excellent Librevox audiobook posted on YouTube.

reply

I read it about 6 years ago. From what I remember it was the same as the movie for the most part. It didn't change much which was rise. Both the movie and book are excellent.

reply

I recommend the novella, although the film is decent.

It was assigned reading in a college class on interpretation of literature that I took in the 1970s.

I loved the idea that it could be read entirely as a ghost story, or entirely as the story of a woman going insane.

I have read it and this movie is an excellent adaption. I've always gotten a laugh at how some people describe it as sexy in some way. A sure fire indication they haven't read it.

The Turn of the Screw also inspired one of the more fun, scary story lines in 'Dark Shadows', the legendary 1960s cult classic TV series.
