What connections, symbolism, references are made from this film to the 80's flick?

Eddie says something like: 'It was all over before it really started for me' in reference to his previous career shooting pool. Seems too harsh since after all he had beaten Fats. I think it means he couldn't play in a big time pool hall after that, just as Bert had threatened.

There are a handful of references in "TCOM" that are direct cues from "The Hustler." One example is Bert's speech to Eddie about character, juxtaposed with Felson telling Vincent he's a character. Vincent misinterpreted that as Eddie saying he had character, to which Eddie says, "i didn't say you had character. You're an incredible flake."

As to the comment below, I won't dignity it with a retort. I would encourage anyone who is a fan of "The Hustler" & Scorsese to see it & make your own judgment.

I would disagree. that's a bit of a exaggeration to say the least, right?

The Color of Money is underrated as while it's not as good as The Hustler (1961) it's not far behind it in my mind...

-The Hustler (1961) - 9/10 (within my Top 31 movies)
-The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10 (within my Top 65 movies)

i just finished re-watching The Hustler (1961) just now on Dec 29th 2016 and it remains top spec. my most recent re-watch of The Color of Money (1986) is July 6th 2015.

the Fast Eddie Felson character is the character Paul Newman is born to play as you can really feel the passion of that character.

p.s. for measure... there is only 202 movies out of the 2,000+ total movies i have seen that i gave a 7/10 or higher. so i don't hand out high rating routinely like some do around here. with that said... it's not that i limit a movies rating just to limit it, it's simply because i rate movies based on my all around enjoyment of them and it's just that not many movies stand out to any higher degree for me is all. i still mildly like movies i give a 6/10 though and do re-watch those from time to time. there is roughly 575 movies i gave a 6 or higher.
