USS Almira really the USS Providence (CLG-6)?

There never was a USS Almira.

I believe that the US Navy ship is the USS Providence(CLG-6), a WWII Cleveland-class cruiser coverted to carry guided missiles in the late 50's.

I see the number '6' on the hull and triple mount main guns on the foredeck with missile radar aft seem to confirm this.

Anyone agree?

I'll have to watch the movie again someday and see if they match. (deleted it off my DVR, so I'll have to wait until it comes on TCM again...)

I hope they air it again soon so that you can see it!

I had a chance to see it again recently when TCM was doing a Steve McQueen tribute, but I blew it: I forgot to set my DVR to record it. So yeah, I'm hoping they air it again soon, but "soon" for TCM might be in another two years!

This is why I prefer to buy the DVDs. Each time TCM airs a movie, I would forget to set my DVR or I wouldn't set it correctly. Eventually, I just gave up on TCM. Now I just stick to buying DVDs, or else getting them from the library.

I looked at the clip you recently sent me on the other board. It is most definitively a Cleveland class cruiser, and the hull number 6 makes it USS Providence.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
