One of the best thrillers ever!
I just watched and taped HOMICIDAL on TCM. After decades of seeing and evaluating chopped-up (and commercially interrupted)prints on local TV stations, I'm now confirmed in my opinion that HOMICIDAL is truly one of the finest thrillers in film history (along with Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW, Lewton's (and Robson's) THE SEVENTH VICTIM, Costa-Gavras's THE SLEEPING CAR MURDER, Argento's DEEP RED, and Carpenter's HALLOWEEN). Did the critically-denigrated William Castle have any idea of what a great film he had made? Or was it in his opinion just another of his once-a-year schlockfests he enjoyed so much grinding out? I didn't see the movie when it was originally released in 1961 (our local theater in an affluent N.J. community would never lower itself to showing a William Castle treat) but I still vividly re-call being intrigued by the movie when Time Magazine's erudite (and un-bylined) movie critic cited it as one of the year's 10 Best. (I believe it was my late friend Bruce Williamson, who moved from Time to Playboy and remained with the latter for the rest of his estimable career.)
