Did anyone else notice...

...right in the beginning of the movie as a plane with one engine is landing, there is a plane in the air in the upper right side of the screen. It supposed to be coming in for a landing but it never moves. I just hangs there the whole time it's on screen.

Oh, yeah. I think most people noticed this long ago. It's even a goof on this site. I have no idea why they let such a poor effect in. It's very obvious and serves no point. They didn't have to show another plane at all.

Much as I love it, there are a lot of visual mistakes in this film. In the shot right after that plane crashes they show Peck getting out of a jeep and looking over toward the crash. On the right is a late 50s pick-up truck, I think a 1958 Chevvy. What makes this so bad is that, like the hovering plane, it's a totally avoidable shot.

I've seen this movie a number times and I just noticed it. If "most people noticed this long ago," how come no one posted about it before?

First, as I said before, there is an entry about it on this site's "Goofs" page, under "Revealing Mistakes". Check it out yourself (scroll well down the page to find it; it's the second goof in that subsection). It's been posted there for many years.

Second, this mistake has been mentioned in posts on this board from time to time, also over many years. I've read a few myself and also mentioned it once or twice. But I don't think anyone ever started an entire thread devoted exclusively to it before. Most people just put such stuff on the Goofs page. There are a lot of mistakes in this film and very few have threads written about them.

Third, not every conversation I've had about this film has been on IMDb. Most people I know who've seen this movie have noted this goof immediately.

Lastly, the fact that you just noticed it doesn't mean others haven't seen it much sooner. I saw this movie as a kid when it came out in 1961 and while I have no recollection whether I noticed it then, I did catch it the next time I saw it, when I was about 20. Point being, you're far from the first to see this or write about it.

Now, to me and most people I know this goof is pretty obvious. But it all depends on what your eye catches. We all miss some things others see right away. There are many movies where some screw-up has escaped my notice until someone pointed it out. It's no big deal.

For example, have you noticed this goof, about the truck they hijack the morning after leaving the monastery (the one in which Andrea machine-guns the guy in the back). The steering wheel in that truck is on the right (as in Britain), which we see throughout the rest of the film...except in the first scene immediately after they steal it, when they're driving along the mountain road and look over to see the town of Mandrakos being blown up by the Germans. In that sequence, with Maria driving, the steering wheel is suddenly on the left, apparently to make the scene work better by having Mallory and Stavros closer to the right window from which to view the town. This is a fairly major lapse in continuity, but it escaped my notice for many years until it finally struck me when I was watching the film yet again one evening years ago.

The hovering plane or the wrong steering wheel?!

Like I said, it all depends what your eye happens to catch. I've missed a lot of stuff elsewhere. I was just pointing out that the OP's goof has been long noted and talked about here by some posters. He's not the first to find it.

Another scene: after the mission Quinn is talking to Pappas without his mouth moving. Not quite as bad as the plane but an odd bit of editing.
