Anyone know if there was something in the book, or something in the movie that was cut out, that explains why James Darren's character decides to do the duel with the German officer? I know he was kill crazy, but he would have killed more Germans by staying under cover and firing at the advancing Germans.

shareI thought the same thing. The beginning of that gun battle may have been left on the cutting room floor but they wanted to show the end of it to let the audience know what happens to James Darren's character. Darren was at the top of his career and I suspect he was cast to let his millions of female fans wanna see a film they woulda not have been interested in otherwise.
