I saw this movie in 1961 or 62, as a double feature with "Thunder in Carolina".
"The Green Helmet" is based on a novel by Jon Cleary, which you can probably find at Alibris or the out of print section of Barnes & Noble on line.
The movie is available on VHW from www.hotrodmemories.com and now on DVD from www.bestvideo.com. In both cases, it costs about $20.
