What's a wire stretcher and why

What is a wire stretcher and why would you have one in an English flat?

It looked like it was used to hang dish towels on. I would guess this was used to hang kitchen dish towels and dish rags back in the 1950's and 1960's. Maybe someone from the U.K. knows more about this item.

I noticed this thing as I watched this film, and it stirred my memory.

We used to have one of these in the kitchen of my old home in Sydney, Australia. It was attached to the inside of the kitchen door, and was - as noted - used to hang damp teatowels while they dried.

As I recall (I was only about ten or eleven at the time) it was made from a length of wire as a former, with finer wire wrapped around it - rather resembling a thin coiled spring. This gave it some degree of flexibility when it was in use.

Haven't seen anything like it for over 50 years.

Funny how such simple things can be so evocative.
