Why FOUR?

Can somebody explain me why four horsemen? Is there a story in the Apocalipse about them or they are Blazco Ibáñez' invention?

The Four are out of Revelations, in the Bible, Ibanez uses them to illustrate the demise of the family....

It's not just about the demise of the family; though that is part of it. Tt's about the destruction of all things; everything we know. Early on the old one, Julio's grandfather, Madariaga, refers to the four horsemen because he cannot believe what is happening within his own family. He has been a certain kind of person who has promoted certain things like family, love, goodness, love of and respect for life. How could his own grandchild and be a Nazi? It is too much to bear; the antithesis of what he stands for, yet he must accept what is. He must come to terms with the fact this person sprang from him so he feels the evil resides within and has always been there. He sees what's happened as the end of everything for him; and it is, he dies.

The four horsemen of the apocalypse represent a series of events that mark the end. This was the initial event that brings ruin to their family but on a larger basis, the Nazis represent evil everywhere. As Heinrich says, people identify with being a Nazi even if they, like him, are not German by birth. Hatred and evil are a way of thinking and it's not unique to any group of people; nor are any groups immune.
