Nancy Kwan's singing was dubbed by B.J. Baker (1927-2002, born Betty Jane Phillips). She was married to Mickey Rooney for five years and is the mother of two sons by him. At the time of filming Flower Drum Song she was also divorced from Buddy Baker, who apparently spent most of his film career composing music for routine Disney product. In 1961 she married legendary jazz guitarist Barney Kessel. That marriage lasted almost twenty years but also ended in divorce.

Professionally, she did much studio singing as back-up to Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, the Righteous Brothers, Sam Cooke, etc.

When she was 17, she was Miss Alabama and was 4th runner up in the 1944 Miss America pageant.
