shareMarcel Pagnol, the author, wrote what formed the basis for Fanny as a trilogy of short stories, starting in 1931 (Marius, 1931; Fanny, 1932; and Cesar, 1936.)
Admittedly, Hollywood production consistency was lacking for certain details... The story took place in the 30s; but the hair and probably some costumes were not exactly on target.
Still a brilliant movie. and all the background music comes from the Broadway musical, produced initially in 1954, starring Florence Henderson as Fanny.
