Sorry, But Not a Joshua Logan Fan (Some Movies, Anyway)

I won't be popular here, but I think Joshua Logan was a pretty ham-handed film director. Maybe he had a lighter touch on stage. Okay, I liked "Picnic," and I haven't seen "Mister Roberts" in a long time. But he totally drained the life out of, and ruined, the movie of "South Pacific." It was really dreadful. I'm partway through watching "Fanny" on TCM, and I've been dismayed at how schleppy and overacted it is. The whole beginning was dragged out, and the humor slow and forced. He just didn't have good timing, and while on stage the actors have to over-emote a bit, he didn't get that this isn't necessary in film, and in fact it's detrimental. I guess I'll watch the rest, but so far, this is far from "delightful" for me.

I rather enjoyed the movie, but to each his own!
