Great movie, horrible title

I really think that this is a classic film with excellent performances by A-list actors. I think that it would have been better received and better known now if it wasn't for that stupid title. To Americans, the title either makes one think of a Jewish woman (as in Fanny Brice) or worse an allusion to a rear end.

Call the movie "Marseille" "Love in Marseille" or anything else and the movie improves its status.

Charles Boyer, Maurice Chivallier, Leslie Caron, and the rest are marvelous in this. The cinematography is breathtaking. The story is charming. I think the title killed it.

At least there will be plenty implied.

Your point is valid. You can't tell much from the title but I actually like that. The titles you suggest would not do justice to the movie. The movie is based in Marseille but it's not about the city.

To call it 'Love in Marseille' is also not very accurate because the story is more than that. The movie is mostly about Fanny. She's the center of all the action so naming the movie for her, I think, is perfectly appropriate. Those who forgot what we all learned as kids, don't judge a book by it's cover, will miss out on this and many other very good movies.

The movie is based on the Broadway musical, "Fanny" that starred Florence Henderson, and in it, Fanny was a bit more prominent. And as mdonin said, the movie really is about Fanny, not about Marseille.
