Dubbed?

I caught only the tail end of this movie but hopefully I'll catch the full version--what I saw was beautiful. However, I have a question--maybe it's my imagination, but are some of the actors dubbed? Maurice Chevalier and Leslie Caron aren't but the others seem to be. Horst Buchholz especially--I swear the words I heard didn't even match his lip movements! Also, from wahat I recall, he had a heavy German accent which you don't hear once in this. So, does anyone know? Like I said I could be imagining it.

I watched the whole movie a couple of times this week, especially looking at Buchholz's mouth (and this was b4 your post) but didn't catch any lip synching. Will look again.
And I was wondering...was the location entirely authentic?

OK--like I said it COULD Be my imagination. And, since I saw this movie, I saw Buchholz in "One, Two, Three". He DID have an accent...but it wasn't that strong. So--I think I was wrong. Cam't help u with the location question though. Sorry.

Fanny's mother was definitely dubbed!!!!

Her voice doesn't match up with her mouth.

I didn't notice that anyone else was.

I just finished watching this on TCM, and Robert Osborne commented on how well Fanny's mother's voice was dubbed in and how most people couldn't tell.(Though my daughter did pick up on the fact that it was, but you have to look really hard to notice.)

gngra, I was just about to write the same thing! I'd never seen it before - I thought it charming, didn't you?

I didn't realize what an epic it was - I expected a much shorter movie.

I also didn't expect all the broad humor - I didn't know it would be comedic at all. I thought it would be a sad drama start to finish - kind of like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Yet its style is entirely different.

..she was the only member of the cast who didn't speak English. The rest of the cast did and were not dubbed.

Josh Logan once explained that the actress originally cast as Fanny's mother turned out to be unexpectedly indisposed, and with time being short, her stand-in, Georgette Ayns (an accomplished French actress herself) ended up filming the part, probably having to learn the part phonetically.

It would not be unusual for an actress of her experience to be hired as a stand-in if she resembled the original hire closely enough. These people also have to know the ins and outs of making a film and a paycheck is a paycheck.

Just saw this for the first time on TCM. Very disappointed in the movie but noticed the truly odd soundtrack or rather the lips moving slightly off with the actual words. Just a millisecond but distracting to me. This went for every actor so I think it was a question of bad editing.
