Previous version?

I got this movie from Netflix because the title was evocative of a black and white movie I saw as a kid. The plot was similar to this but the Hercules/Strongman character enters the underworld by ripping a gigantic tree from the earth and decending into the ground. The underworld scenes were very atmospheric and scary. I seem to recall a frightened woman persued down a long staircase. Does this ring any bells for anyone?
