DVD

The Criterion folks are getting their head and gear ready for Le Samourai and with already two of his classics Bob Le Flambeur and Le Cercle Rouge in their collection. Now they should get this and Leon Morin prete, L' Armée des ombres, Le Deuxième souffle, and L' Aîné des Ferchaux on dvd.

I don't know about region 1 releases, but this one, Le Deuxieme Souffle and Leon Morin are available on region 2 dvd. Remastered, so they look and sound great.

I'm not sure what the status of Le Dolous is with the Criterion people (though considering the Kino subtitles/print I wish they would), but considering that L'Armee des obres is getting it's very first US theatrical release next month, the DVD release for that at least may not be far behind, maybe for this year...

I wrote to Criterion this week, and they said they did not have any plans to give Le Doulos "the Criterion Treatment." Too bad - it's my favorite Melville film of all! I guess I'll have to get a region 2 disc and find a DVD player that will play it!

thats a shame, cause 4 out of 5 of Rialto Pictures releases usually make their way to Criterion. I just assumed this would be one of them.

Get the British Film Institute DVD, it's as a good as a Criterion, sharp, nice cover, perfect english subtitles, and a load of extras.

Agreed. The extras include very informative commentaries by Melville expert Ginette Vincendeau:
