Symbolism (spoilers)

In the final scene, Maurice, who is dying says "the screen', his final words. These words warn Silien of danger behind his rather lovely Chinese lacquer screen. Silien shoots the screen repeatedly and mortally wounds Kern, the hitman hired by Maurice in prison to kill Silien. Kern stumbles from behind the screen and lies dying on the carpet. Silien turns his back and Kern manages one shot before dying. Silien is now mortally wounded. He calls Fabienne and his final words are "I won't be coming tonight". He looks in the mirror and tidies himself before collapsing, presumably dead. At this point his hat, which he has been wearing throughout, falls off and rolls across the carpet.

At the beginning of the film we are told that 'doulos' is a slang term for hat and also a term shared by police and criminals to mean a police informant. The final shot of Silien's hat falling off his head confirms that Silien is the 'hat', the doulos and informant. Like Kern, Silien was behind a screen throughout the film, waiting to do the dirty and earn a nice living as a result.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

Brilliant!
I noticed the hat in the final scene but I couldn't figure out what the symbolism was. I actually belived the story Silien told right up until I read you post.

I agree with everything you said.

No it doesn't. At Nuttheccio’s nightclub, “The Cotton Club” where he meets his old flame, who is now the bosses girlfriend he deposits his hat at the cloakroom, and the girl who receives the hat gives it ticket number "13". This symbolizes the string of bad luck that is played out for the two protagonists Maurice and Silien at the end of the movie.

Silien is a friend of Maurice, but he is also a friend of L'nspecteur Salignari and sometimes gives him information, so yes: he is indeed a "doulos", but he is not THE dolous that gives up the location of Maurice's heist to L'nspecteur Salignari.

What Jean says to Maurice just after Silien has finished telling everything to Maurice is key to understanding Silien and the film. Jean says: "Silien would do anything for a friend, hood or cop. I can assure you that Salignari and you were his only friends."

EDIT: after Silien kills Nuttheccio and Armand he switches to a black hat for the rest of the film.

EDIT: here is a good analysis of the film:
