This film is unforgettable....

...because I saw it when I was about 10. My dad took me to see it in a little theatre in Crested Butte, Colorado. I have never forgotten it. It set in my mind that bad people (the convicts) may not be ALL bad. That they do have hearts just like good people, but maybe are buried under the bad decisions they have made. I am 56 now, and I wish I could find a copy of it so I could watch it again....I remember the quicksand was horrifying, and leprosy was something I had never heard of before I saw it. I think I didn't speak for a long while after we came out of the theatre, then finally, a rush of questions for my Dad.
I had the same reaction to Apocalypse Now, years later, when I realized that war didn't stop for dinner, and that those VietNam soldiers were essentialy "stuck" in foxholes, until someone came and got them...then I read everything I could on it, in a rush...

This film made an impression on me, when I was most impressionable.
I will never forget it.

If I had seen this movie at a very young age it would have made a big impression on me too. I think I would have identified with the kids and would have been scared.

Seeing it as an adult, the movie made an impression on me too, but in a different way. I was frustrated, annoyed, and angry that situations like that exist. I identified with the priest. In trying to do good things he kept butting heads with a lot of stubborn, narrow-minded people. He was misunderstood and that took a toll on him. It's a reminder that we have to be willing to fight for what we truly believe. It may be a tough fight but we can never give up.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
