Terrible dialogue in the film

There are no pauses. No atmosphere. They talk, talk, talk. Almost over each other. This is a one star film.

It's a reflection of how movies, especially low-budget ones such as this, were made in the early 1960's.

The dialogue is excellent and the screenplay was a worthy BAFTA winner.

And you know, people talk over each other in real life.

I think the OP must be American. They always have difficulty with English spoken by English.

The terse and witty script was the best part of this movie.

reply

Whether they are American or not, the OP just doesn't like most movies in general. They have given a 1 star rating to 1/3rd of all the movies they've seen. Very few films are THAT bad.

reply

the dialogue was brilliant. i havent seen such nicely written dialogue in a while.

I'm American and I loved the movie.

Terrible dialogue my a$$ - the dialogue was superb.

reply

Agreed - I love the dialogue, it's nice and punchy, and really turns an OK film into a quality one.

The OP must hate every movie made by Howard Hawks, then.

"All the universe or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?"

I think there was too much talk in it as well. Dialogue can easily bore. Something else, the most overall preferred person is a quiet person. It is risky to be too talkative.

reply

The dialogue is actually very nimble. One of the strengths of this film. I'd go so far as to say that it comes across like a radio play with pictures.

The problem is in the direction. This is particularly noticeable in the (very numerous) telephone conversations when there are not even token pauses for what might have been said at the other end.

Just watched this film yesterday and thought that it had some of the best dialogue I've heard since the last Howard Hawks movie I saw. You'd expect a lot of chatty people if they worked for a newspaper, wouldn't you? It has the added benefit of making you pay more attention to the movie so you don't miss anything.
