The UCLA Film & Television Archive recently showed a re-mastered version in some theaters. Don't know if it will become available on DVD.

The (apparently out-of-print) shown here is of not-so-great-quality. It's watchable, that's about it, but ridiculously overpriced as an out-of print item.

Hopefully the restored version will make its way to DVD.

I felt that Carl Lee could have easily been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this movie. The movie doesn't start until Cowboy comes in! Too bad there was only room for Sidney Potier. Ivan Dixon, Brock Peters and Lee were just as talented, just didn't get the chance because there was room for only one black actor.

I also watched this on TCM. I remembered Carl Lee from the film 'Super Fly'.I also remember his father Canada Lee from the films 'Cry, the Beloved Country' & 'Lifeboat'.

Ben Mankiewicz gave a little trivia after the film. Apparently the director of this film ,Shirley Clark, fell in love with Carl and moved in with him right after this film.

I plan on buying all this and all the films shown with this one from the couple who introduced them all with Ben the other night. They own Milestone Films.

I recommend Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep if you don't own it already. I think that's my favorite of what Milestone has released so far.
