Not liked in US because allied not depicted as saviours?

Not a critique, just wondering, do you think many people in the States might not like the movie because the allied are not -as is often the case- depicted as the saviours?

There is no indication that I have found which describes a resistance to this movie on those grounds. But I am sure it was not uncommon to find such an opinion.

Certainly today, which so much time passed, we may not welcome this view of not being the saviors but, we can certainly better understand other points of view and are not offended by them.

But more to the point, the rapists were not actually Americans but Morrocans.

Supposedly Americans raped not only Axis but other Allies which along with looting is why they are disliked in France possibly even to this day.

I don't think a foreign movie from 1960 will draw much reaction from anyone who is a 'gung-ho, USA all the way" type.

American audiences aren't all one flavor so a movie not depicting the US soldiers as saviors will get mixed reviews, depending on that persons politics. Even Clint Eastwood, arguguably a right wing hero, has made a WWII movie from the Japanese view (Letters from Iwo Jima) which was well received.

Letters from Iwo Jima was a master stroke ... head and soldiers above Flag of our Fathers ... and miles above this dismal poduction.

This film has 2 strengths 1) It tells a story most do not know 2) Loren's off the charts sexuality (first foreigner to win Best Actress). Yet this has one major weakness ... it is not a very good film ... especially for it's time.
