I bought Two Women at a flea market awhile ago, so I'm assuming the one I bought is a 'bad' copy. Are they really supposed to be speaking English, were they dubbed over with their own voices? The DVD didn't have any other audio, but I assume they must be REALLY speaking Italian.

It's Italian, not Spanish. I saw it on Turner Classic Movies and it is definitely Italian. It's an Italian movie!

It was made into a TV movie in 1988, also starring Sophia Loren. Perhaps that's the version you have? If you have the 1960 version in English, it is definately dubbed.

I really only watched the movie to see her performance, and as blown away as I was by it in English, if it wasn't her doing the dubbing I'll try to re-watch it in its original Italian to get a true sense of her performance.

shareI saw it decades ago and managed to get a dvd copy about five years ago in subtitles. The quality is abysmal but with Loren in who cares. Apropos quality, is there a decent print of Rome Open City out yet?

SPOILER.Loren is fantastic, as is the actress playing her daughter, but I don`t think the film is the classic it should be.The script meanders around in the village during the middle portion of the film and Raf Vallone is sorely missed after what amounts to little more than a cameo.Powerful scenes of the rape and aftermath but the one that sticks in my mind is the woman offering her lactating breast as the Germans have killed her baby.
I`ve not seen Rome Open City yet and still trying to find a nice subtitled version of Four Days Of Naples(1962).It seems that most commercial releases of Two Women are rubbish, although the Talking Pictures print,despite the dubbing,looks like it`s had a proper restoration.
Uomini Contro(1970) is another one worth searching for and out on Italian dvd with subs.They couldn`t do a proper restoration apparently as some idiot has lost the original film negative!
I watched quite a lot of Italian neo-realist films when I was a student and still dabble. I had a look and Criterion have restored Roma città aperta (which is a bit mind numbing to watch) but these days I like Mick Angel films more, especially La Notte which I may have raved about several times.
