I can't remember if it was mentioned, but I'm assuming she stole it from either her grandmother (I don't think she had parents?) or from either teacher. It could be that Karen had the book, as she will be married and was possibly either sleeping with Joe, or was studying on what would be expected of her. She mentions wanting to get pregnant more than once so it could be the book is full of ideas on the best ways of conception, which positions to use for maximum effect, etc. In those days they did have those books aimed at newly weds trying to concieve, and believe it or not, they did have diagrams.

You are probebly right. But I saw in a previous conversation about that book, and read that the book might talk about lesbianism... So maybe it was martha's book...

The thing is, if the book talked about lesbianism, I thought it would have been brought more to light. I truly believe the book was about sex in general, most likely just heterosexual subject matter.

Martha hadn't accepted or really acknowledged her homosexuality and even thought it was disgusting or wrong (I don't own the film so I can't think of her words at the moment but it was something along those lines) so I couldn't really picture her owning a book like that. It seemed she would probably be more the type to deny herself any reading material on the subject for fear of confirming her own feelings (or fears) of who she really is. I could not see her owning such a book, and if she did, she would read it in secret and have it hidden somewhere ridiculous behind lock and key, where the average child wouldn't stumble upon it).

Karen, on the other hand, is probably more the type to be reading a book about sex (for the reasons I mentioned in my previous post) and inadvertantly leave it somewhere in her unlocked room where it might be spied by a snooping kid.
