Wow...

[Spoilers]

I just finished watching this and ,with regards to Shirley Maclaine's performance, all I can say is 'wow'.
She was amazing, one of the best film performances I have ever seen.
When she was confronting Mary's Grandmother for the first time I completely forgot I was watching a movie, it was like I was in the room actually witnessing what was going on un-scripted.

She really made everyone else in this look like amateurs.

I agree. Shirley MacLaine blew me away. She is on my list of favorite actresses because of this role. Her performance is heartbreaking.
I also think she was brave for taking the role. It was 1961 after all.

Agree. Good movie

I think Shirley Maclaine didn't get an Oscar nomination because she got nominated twice in the 2-3 years prior. Hepburn also got nominated for Breakfast at Tiffanys instead of this film (they probably didn't want her getting 2 nominations in the same year)

The acting was great across the board. A quality picture.
