The bunch of flowers that Mary picks up

How did Karen know about the flowers which Mary picks up from the trash for Mrs. Mortar? Could it be that Joe hand picked them and Martha threw them out? Or perhaps Martha picked them and then decided to bin them when Karen comes in late with the news of her engagement?

Maybe I'm overanalysing it but it seems to me that the bunch of flowers was an overlooked plot point. They are fresh flowers that normally wouldn't be thrown out especially when Karen and Martha are barely making ends meet.

Thoughts?

I thought they were from the recital that was held right before.

They were left over from the day before and probably weren't that fresh.

I do not think it's anything more than that.
