Joe Cardin

I felt that Joe's character was not developed enough, at least in this version of the play. There seemed to be a lot more to him than what was actually said and/or shown.I felt that he might have been gay himself but in denial. In one of the first scenes when he speaks mockingly to Karen while driving he gives out a very weird 'repressed homosexual' vibe.Ditto when he finally asks Karen if she's in a sexual relationship with Martha and reacts almost hysterically even after she denies it.James Garner is definitely miscast here.Perhaps a more sensitive actor, somebody like Montgomery Clift would have brought more depth to the part..James Garner makes Joe Cardin look a swinger in the making.

Why do liberals and gays aways imagine everybody to be gay?

Perhaps you would know?

Huh? You sound very homophobic!

To the OP, you're JOKING, right?

In any event, I had a good laugh!

Ignore the other tacky replies.

You may be on to something. I'm not sure Joe really loved Karen all that much. When they go out in the car at the very beginning, Karen asks him if he feels in love. He doesn't answer. He does say he's tired of other people's children (as a doctor). And implies that he's sexually frustrated. Then when Karen says, let's have a baby 12 months from now, he kisses her. And SHE says she loves him-- that's where the scene ends.

Joe was not devoted to her with the same intensity that Martha was.
