With all the junk that they find necessary to release on DVD, where is this gem of a movie?? After all it was released on Video several years ago, so why not on DVD?? It deserves a Criterion treatment, nothing less!! Hopefully, some studio moron will come to his senses and release it!!
This under-rated drama (if the credits said Sirk had directed it, it would be highly regarded and much discussed- I love Sirk's films and this is as good as you get from another director, John Sturges, dealing with similar material). A splendid transfer has been released in Spain. Wide Screen ,with Elmer Bernstein's lush and varied score shown off to good advantage(recently released on CD by Vareses-Sarabande). Hamilton is almost as good as he was under Minnelli's direction in the superbly operatic melodrama HOME FROM THE HILL. Kohner does subtle wonders with a thankless role and Robards adds a touch of real acting class. The plot has unexpected twists (people DON'T end up with the ones you expect them to- highly unusual for a drama of this ilk), and there's plenty of neurosis lurking underneath the outwardly rich and respectable lives of the main characters. Some great lines too.
I saw this movie on the THIS channel. I missed the first part, but it was interesting. The plot was a little racy, especially the subject of rape. Although it's obvious Veronica lied since she is known as the town tramp. I would rate the movie a 7.
...it's in Spain... and that's about it. Widescreen and not anamorphic... but looking not too shabby until something better comes along. :) Has the wonderful title "Brotes de pasion" and is available from amazon.es Hope that helps.
