Does anyone know any books or articles that explain the animation process of this movie? I've never seen anything like and would love understand better how Karel Zeman achieved such colors and interaction between live actors and fake sets.

Also the czech 20-minutes long documentary "Karel Zeman for children", which can be found as extra on the spanish dvd of Baron Prasil (check dvdgo.com) gives an insight of some of his tricks.
You will be amazed at how simple they are!

the Karel Zeman Museum in Prague has exhibits that demonstrate many of Zeman's special effects techniques. some of the demonstrations are included as extras on the DVDs for Baron Prášil, The Fabulous World of Jules Verne, and Journey to the Beginning of Time, which are available at the museum and online (eBay, Amazon, museum web site)
