Story Line Question - Possible Spoilers

Hello,

I think I saw this movie as a child a few times. Since it's not available on DVD -- can anyone verify if this is the film I'm thinking of...

Possible spoilers ahead if this is the film I think it is.

In this story, does the lead actor get in a car accident near the end?

Does he die? Or, do he and his wife die?

Do the children go to live with Susan Hayward at the end?

If anyone can verify this or tell me what does actually happen at the end, I would appreciate it.

Yes you remember the film very well!

He and his wife both die. She dies immediately and he dies after speaking to Rae from his hospital bed. It was terribly sad.

It's available on VHS if that helps.

I know this is an old post, but no one answered your last question. Yes, the children visit Rae at the end, but they do not go to live with her.

It's been a long time since I've cried during a film, and I didn't quite turn on the waterworks here, but that scene was tremendously touching and sad — but also left me with a touch of hope that three damaged souls who had no relationship before might find solace in each other as they dealt with a mind-numbing loss. Such a powerful scene.

As for the previous poster who said the children don't come to live with Rae, I'm not so sure. It's not explicitly stated, but I get the feeling they could have worked out some relationship, based on the needs of all.
