White shoes

I also love this movie for its total immersion in time. The colors, the cars, the furniture make this movie fascinating.

But one thing bothers me: In almost every scene Lana Turner is wearing white gloves, carrying a white straw bag, and wearing white shoes. In two scenes she's even wearing white straw hats.

Janis Paige clearly says, "Early? It's April!"

In 1961, in California, did women wear white shoes before Memorial Day?

Hiya Leggw,

I don't know about California but I remember the general rule that wearing white after Labor Day or before Easter was taboo.

Want me to send out a Tweet asking about this (I'd be glad to because now MY interest is peeked).

I don't know about California either, but in Illinois, we certainly didn't wait until Memorial Day! Easter Sunday was the day for white shoes.

I was born in 1949 and have many pictures of myself and brother on Easter Sunday morning during the 50s. I'm always in white shoes.

I have a picture of myself, circa 1960, in an Easter suit with a fur collar. I can't see my shoes, but by the expression on my face I could have been wearing combat boots and standing in six inches of mud.

Hey folks,

I don't know about the gals for sure, but from the early 1950s into the early 1960s most guys I knew were sporting a new pair of white bucks for Easter - complete with buffing pad and white powder bag to fix blemishes we would get along the way. Around the same time, we would be switching to tan suede shoes toward the end of summer.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile
