pretenious,contrived phony 'humor'

Every other line is a phony joke, written for Bob Hope.He never wrote an original joke in his life. This would have been rated like one star in the 1960's. This was silly, standup "comedy" that the producers tried to make money with this low grade crap. You can spin it anyway you want. I would rather watch a B movie then this phony Comedy.

The last time I saw this film was in a movie theater in 1961. I enjoyed it then and have always had fond memories.

Seeing it again 50+ years later, I cannot disagree with your comments. Bob Hope's one-liners are indeed corny and not all-that-well delivered, although I did manage a few chuckles.

To me, though, this movie's excellence is not in its plot or its screenwriting, but rather as a time capsule of an era when things were more innocent, people had values and appearance was not an after-thought.

I loved the costumes, hair styles and make-up. I love that furs were fashionable; pre-Peta and aerosol paint. The men all wore suits. It was joy to see those Chrysler land-yachts again, including the convertible in the closing scene where the doors were left open but there was no buzzing sound from doors left ajar, headlights left on or keys forgotten in the ignition.

Are we better off today now that we don't club baby seals, lock our keys in the ignition or buy tainted Tylenol? Yes, but it has all come at a cost: the loss of innocence.

For me, it's fun to watch this and reminisce. For me, that's what raises Bachelor in Paradise from the one star that you are probably correct in assessing it, to the highest rating posible in viewing pleasure.

I'm only 36 years old and I love this movie!

Okay, so maybe some of the jokes are corny. These jokes are much better than what many modern movies have to offer. (Frankly, bathroom humor does nothing for me.)

I agree about the outfits which they wore. Those outfits were great! The cars were nicer back then than today's cars. It's nice to see scenery from an era which I never experienced. Nice to see people talking to each other instead of just texting nonstop.

Besides...I absolutely love the soundtrack, and I love that Lana Turner still looked so good at age 40. Today, actresses are considered old at 30, so it was a refreshing change to see a 40 year old in a "sexy" role.

And yes, Jim Hutton really looked hot...hot...hot! Paula Prentiss was one lucky lady!

Jim Hutton: talented gorgeous hot hunk; adorable as ElleryQueen; SEXIEST ACTOR EVER

Imagine...a comedy movie made with a script the actors didn't write. Did Bob Hope die owing you money or something?

Geesh!

I probably just don't like "The one liners" kind of humor that was used by Bob Hope and all those other wanna be "actors" out of the 1950s. That would probably include Bob Hope,Bing Crosby,Danny Kaye,Milton Berle, etc. These would not be considered legitimate actors today.I know in those days they considered these comedians funny, but the material seems corny, juvenile.Maybe I just never bought into silly, pretentious story lines. By the way did you see the "Dean Martin roasts" Where they stage these roasts for unfunny washed up comedians. You can see how unfunny the laughs are. But that's another story for another time.I guess they will never let me in to these comedy clubs.

Pity, your corny, unfunny humor is what I find to be hilarious.

Now if you want unfunny, I haven't laughed at much from today's comedians like Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler in a very, very long time, but ROTFL at many of Hope's lines.

Corny maybe, but pretentious? Do people know what that word means anymore?

reply

"Pretentious" gets over-used a lot in reviews. People seem to think it means, "It's pretending to be good but I don't like it." Or they try to use it as a handy all-purpose tool for discrediting something.

reply

I see; "pretentious" is now just a alternate word for "bad".
