It's a silly, completely unrealistic comedy. It was OK to watch with your young family on a Sunday matinee back in 1962. The movie is filled with lots of slapstick and physical comedy, dog tricks, etc., so very little dialogue takes place. I guess the goal was to entertain everybody in the family, from your toddler to your senile great grandmother, and they probably succeeded at that.
The interesting thing is that this movie is a revision of an earlier movie, Susan Slept Here (1954), by the same director and starring Debbie Reynolds. Has anyone seen that one? I have it in the DVR as well, and I'll probably watch it.
