Pals worst?

Just about every book Ive read where this film comes up the author calls this George Pals worst film. Why? Okay its one of his worst acted films and most of his other films had better looking special effects but I can still watch this movie over and over. CONQUEST OF SPACE and DOC SAVAGE are far less fun to watch than this. Most critics panned this when it first came out also.

I'll take George Pal's worst films over many other filmmakers' best films anytime!!!

"PAL'S WORST FILMS ARE BETTER THAN MANY OTHERS' BEST FILMS!!!"

i was glad to see so many comments from so many that remembered seeing this movie in childhood.i'm watching on tmc now,for the first time since it was in theaters in early sixties. maybe not time machine, but still good as the previous poster said.

Yeah a bad Pal film is still a pretty good one compared to a lot of others. I remember seeing this in the theater when I was eleven. It was fun watching it today on TCM.
Those shots from Quo Vadis used in the climax are funny. They go by fast enough that I couldn't recognize Robert Taylor or Deborah Kerr, but I did see Buddy Baer (Ursus). He's hard to miss... big fella!!

I recognized the QUO VADIS scenes right away!

youroldpaljim, you are quite right those two (2) films are not nearly as good. Would throw in 'tom thumb' and THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. Would rate all four (4) IMDB Four****Stars. Rated ATLANTIS IMDB Six******Stars.

I saw it in the theatre when it was first out in the early sixties. We loved it. I hope to see it again. George Pal was great.

reply

I agree that Conquest In Space was slow and practically ruined by the religious fanatic character. However, great special effects! Atlantis is more watchable.

I think this trivia entry pretty much sums it up,

George Pal was unhappy with the script but was forced to begin production before it had been polished due to an impending writers' strike. The strike occurred during production, which stopped any rewrites.
