At first I was intreagued. The cinematography was excellent, the organ music significantly less so. The time/space thing was soon apparent and I couldn't help thinking that this was something filmed in the 1960s here in Portmerion.

It just tried too hard and seemed to fall at every hurdle which was a shame as it was a film that I wanted to like.

In the end I decided that:

(a) There could be been more spaceships
(b) That the missing three chimneystacks were never going to be explained and it was this that bothered me most about the whole film. Other than the bloody awful music.

It really could have been great but it pushed self-indulgence into the territory marked 'pretentious bollocks'.

Having said that, I can see us doing alcohol fuelled re-enactment days at Portmerion for giggles.

As I say, needed more spaceships.

Marienabad is not pretentious. It gives you the visuals and allows you to create the story. It's not pretending to know anything.

Just because the film doesn't work for you doesn't mean it failed.

Well said!

Personally, the film has always fascinated & haunted me, and has a powerful effect even after many viewings over the years.

Ha ha ha there could always be more spaceships! Apart from that I liked it. Couldn't explain why I did though.
