Why was the Criterion release so short-lived?

I've seen this happen with several other films, including The Third Man, which have the Blu-rays of these films being held at prices of $100+ I'm really bummed because I want to own this.

Did the rights go to Studio Canal? I own the Pandora's Box Criterion DVD, which is one that never even got issued on Blu-ray, and is now extremely expensive. I really would love to own the Blu-ray, but it's so damned expensive. I dropped $60 on a copy of Peeping Tom, which is I think the most I've spent on a Criterion title. I once considered getting The Third Man Blu-ray but my senses got the better of me.

F&ck it. I just ordered the Blu-ray on Half.com. $98, but fairly reasonable given most prices on eBay and Amazon for a sealed copy of the Blu-ray are $200+. An early Christmas gift to myself I suppose.

It went out of print. They have a limited run and Criterion doesn't reissue stuff that goes OOP (unless it's upgrading an older DVD edition or DVD to Blu).

It's worth it. I think Criterion went in knowing the window would close on it soon. Same thing for the Melville releases. I'm fortunate enough to have purchased them when first released.
