DVD in Eclipse Series 25, coming 1/25/11

All Night Long is one of four titles included in Criterion's upcoming Eclipse box set, Basil Dearden's London Underground, arriving January 25, 2011. List price $59.99.

The others are Sapphire, The League of Gentlemen and Victim. All long awaited, and an excellent collection.

Seems a steep price. I'll wait for this one on a single DVD and then snap it up. I can't wait to see what else I'll uncover about it in a second watching.

I doubt you'll ever see an official release as a single. The Eclipse set contains four slipcases, and Criterion doesn't break up its sets to sell titles separately. I would assume that some people may make these available individually through eBay or Amazon Marketplace, though you may have to pay a lot.

Of course, you can buy the set virtually anywhere on line for a lot less than the list price. (I paid $44.95, about $11 a title.) If you live near a Barnes & Noble bookstore they have sales of Criterion titles twice a year, when every Criterion disc and set are 50% off -- a terrific deal. You could pick up the whole set for under $30 then. Their next such sale should be in July or so. (Unfortunately, this set came out just after B&N's last Criterion sale and I didn't want to wait another six months to get it.)

Indeed. Though at least Criterion did issue the five new-to-DVD Kurosawa films, initially available only in its AK100 boxed set of 35 of his films, as separates, more or less. Four were in the Eclipse set Early Kurosawa, but that's not so bad. Warner just released Kazan's America, America as a single, several months after its first release in the Kazan box set of 15 films, and Universal is releasing three Gregory Peck films, previously available only in a box set, as separates in April. Sometimes these *grumbles* do get the consumer's message!
