Question about the DVD

The single DVD you can buy by itself, is it the same one that comes in the boxset with The Hawks and the Sparrows and The Gospel According to St. Matthew? If not, which version do I need to get?

reply

I think the single DVD is the same as the one included in the box set. Both are released by the same company, Water Bearer Films, Inc. According to reviewers on Amazon.com there is a problem with the subtitles, they are not easily discernible.

You could buy the Italian DVD version (region 2) of Accattone on www.italiadvd.it/shop/shopping.php?arti=493341&t=ACCATTONE

That's true, the whole box set released by "Water Bearer Films" is quite poor in terms of audio and specially in video. very bad prints. Watchable but quite mediocre to say the less.

The problem with the subtitles in "Accatone" is that they are "burnt in", they ain't removable.
The subtitles are in white but have not a dark edge as usual, and since the movie is in B&W and the contrast is quite poor... go figure how hard is to read them when the subtitles have a "whitish background". Then they are hardly readable.

Besides that fact the subtitles not always translates what the characters really said and not translates everything.

I'd noticed that because I speak italian to some extent, not perfectly but it's as good as my english more or less. I'm sure any italian-speaker who have seen this DVD could confirm what I am telling you.

Great movie, awful DVD.

This is all very true. Every Pasolini release by Water Bearer, whether on DVD or VHS, is of incredibly poor quality. But they're worth it if you enjoy his work and require English subtitles.
