Dorothy's Birthday

I love Hazel and have all the DVDs. I was always baffled how this particular episode seemed different to me - Hazel's hair was totally not like every other episode, the rooms were different, the foyer had tile which was never in any other episode. I always felt that this could not really have been the 23rd episode of Season 1 - it seemed like it would have been the first. But since the intro was different as well, I wasn't sure.

Come to find that it indeed was the pilot and for some reason delayed it until the end of Season 1.

Although I loved each an every character, in this particular episode I find Dorothy to be quite spoiled and unaware of how disrespectful she was to Hazel. Offering on the spur of the moment to host a bridge party without any regard that it was Hazel's day off and the work involved, and then pouting because she believed she wasn't getting one of her homemade Birthday cakes conveyed a very spoiled and entitled woman - which she in all other episodes certainly was not.

As this is indeed the pilot, it may have taken a few shows to alter her character into the very appreciate and lovely character she was.

I watched this also just this morning, I was really confused. Kitchen looked different, foyer look different. Hazel looked a little disheveled and a bit heavier.

So did I..On ANTV at 10 AM... Yes, she looked unkempt and I think it was largely due to the way her hair was and the uniform was not fitted as in the other episodes. And I did search it because it always seemed different and it was stated that this was the pilot that they showed later in the first season.

I remember this from a few years ago on this board. Shirley wore a wig for all of the episodes except for the pilot.

No! That's not true at all, Elvis takes 50% of everything I earn!

Interesting. I never knew that. Sure explains why she looked so different in this episode.
