Is that an M-16 rifle in Harolds room?

In episode 10 of season 2 "Genie with a light brown lamp" there is a seen where Dorothy and Hazel are tucking Harold into bed and Hazel reads Harold a story. In the background on top of a book case or something is a toy(I assume)rifle that bares a strong resemblance to an M-16. It is leaned vertically against the wall below two crossed American flags. The rifle more strongly resembles a Mattel M16 Marauder which was the toy version of the M-16 battle rifle first issued to troops in Vietnam in 1963. However this episode was made long before that and didn't air until November of 1962. The toy version wasn't introduced until 1966 or thereabout. Still there is that rifle in this scene. It's black, appears to have a black pistol grip stock and hand guard and a protruding magazine of the same size and shape as the M16 Marauder/M-16. The magazine appears to be a little wider than the real M-16 rifle which is consistent with the Marauder toy version. Anyone else ever see this? If anyone has access to this episode please watch it and tell me if you see the same thing or not.

Could it possibly be the AR-15 (1959)?

NO and I'm not really even sure what it is you're trying to say. But seriously if you watch the episode you'll see it.

"NO and I'm not really even sure what it is you're trying to say."

I was simply offering a suggestion. It was a solid suggestion and nothing to understand outside of that. Sorry my suggestion was not to your liking, guess someone else rushing to the page can answer you better.

Sorry, all I was saying was that I didn't understand your suggestion. I appreciate your response. I assume you're suggesting that it might have been an AR-15 which was first introduced in 1959. I don't know but the greater question would then be why does squeaky clean little Harold Baxter from the perfect all American family have a 1959 AR-15 in his bedroom? If you get a chance to watch the episode do so and see what you think.

I have been watching it in the morning when I get a chance but still have not seen the episode "yet." I will try to take a good look at it and see what you are talking about, I am curious now as well. You have peaked my interest. I wonder if they made a toy version of it, that is bit before my time as I am a 70/80's child.
Of course I recall seeing an episode of Beaver when one of (IIRC) Beavers friends invited him to a party, a girl party. He wandered into a room at her house and her father had guns in the room. The father was showing the gun to Beaver, like it was an everyday thing to show a kid. Maybe there was some in episode advertising/product placement?

reply

When I was a kid I had a toy Davy Crockett flintlock rifle that fired one cap at a time.

When I was older, I got a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. I didn't shoot my eye out either!

reply

It was an everyday thing for a father to show his guns to the kids. In a lot of families, it still is.

reply

Why wouldn't squeaky-clean little Harold Baxter have one? We all played with toy guns in those days...and somehow, we didn't turn out to be sociopaths.

reply

Yes, at that time most men owned at least one rifle or handgun, and it was not a big deal. Many fathers and sons did target shooting or hunting together, and it was so socially acceptable that nobody thought twice about it. I and all the boys I knew played with toy guns all the time. I had my own .22 rifle when I was eight. Now we are all in our sixties, and so far none of us has ever shot anybody.

If it jams it's the real thing!!!
