Is that the way such decisions are made?

Kildare and Gillespie decide what they are going to do, treating it entirely as their decision. the family is not even consulted. Kildare want to try to save the boy because he's got more of his life ahead of him and, begin younger might have a better chance of survival. But the father is a very prominent and productive man, still middle aged, would be more likely to do things for humanity, the child's potential being unknown.

I found it impossible to believe that the doctors would be the ones to decide this on such a basis and not the family.
