What was the deal with these bizarre bumpers?

First of all I want to say I love this show. But between epidoses, I remember seeing these strange bumpers, weird and a bit psychedelic. My brother said they probably contained subliminal imagery and I thought they were simply "commercial break" inserts. Have you seen these? If so, could somebody please explain their meaning or intended use? The dialogue is not quite exact but it should give you an idea of what's going on:

--------------------

1) Scene opens with a thunderstorm and we see the silhouettes of Rocky and Bullwinkle flying amidst. As rain starts falling, they materialize (in outline form only). Finally we see a field with flowers popping out of the ground and blooming (because of the rain) and suddenly Rocky and Bullwinkle pop out of the ground in similar fashion, now fully drawn and colored. Cut to black after 3 seconds.

--------------------

2) Scene opens with Bullwinkle painting but we can't see the picture. Rocky stands by, with a baffled look.

Rocky: "That's an odd painting Bullwinkle"
Bullwinkle: "I only paint what I see"
Rocky: "But what do you see?"
Bullwinkle: "This, is what I see!"

At this point, Bullwinkle grabs his easel and turns it around. The camera zooms to reveal a garbled image of spirals and stars. Cut to black after 4 seconds.

--------------------

3) Scene opens at a battlefield. Rocky, dressed as a General, is peeking though a pair of binoculars. Bullwinkle then drops via parachute holding a piece of paper.

Bullwinkle: "Special message for General Rocky" (hands him the paper)
Rocky: "Gee, thanks!" (unfolds the paper and reads it)
Bullwinkle: "Is it important?"
Rocky: "Sure, have a look!"

Rocky opens the paper in front of the camera and all we see is a red checkerboard pattern. Cut to black after 1 second.

--------------------

4) Scene opens at a classroom. Bullwinkle is dressed as a teacher and Rocky is sitting in front of him.

Bullwinkle: "It's time for today's lesson"
Rocky: "Bullwinkle is a Dunce?" (camera pans to reveal a blackboard with a crude caricature of Bullwinkle wearing a dunce hat and the legend "Bullwinkle is a Dunce")
Bullwinkle: "No, not that! THIS!"

Bullwinkle spins the blackboard and the camera zooms to it before cutting to black.

--------------------

I'm also surprised they haven't been mentioned on this board or posted in Youtube. Any ideas?

reply

Rocky: Look Bullwinkle, a message in a bottle.

Bullwinkle: Fan mail from some flounder?

Rocky: No, this is what I really call a MESSage. (zoom into scribbles)

reply

Thanks for your reply. I forgot about that one with the bottle, but the show was dubbed into spanish here in Mexico so the gag was probably lost... now it makes perfect sense!

Do the other bumpers work the same way? Word plays in english?

I should watch those again sometime in the future (in english of course)... do you, by any chance, know if they are included in the DVD box set? Thanks again for your comment.

reply

I'm pretty sure that the blackboards and the messages with squiggles that are always shown to the camera at the end of the bumpers were for a place to insert the sponsor's name/logo/whatever. It was pretty common back then for the characters in both cartoons and live action shows to mention the sponsors in the show, or just before the break.

I'm just a patsy!

reply

Nope, I saw the originals and the blackboards/squiggles were just that. However, the title characters did do commercials for their primary sponsor, which was Cheerios. Tagline, Bullwinkle: "So go with the goodness of Cheerios. But watch where you're going."

reply

Yes, that's where the commercials were put in.

reply

Bullwinkle looking into crystal ball:
eeny meeny chili beany
the spirits are about to speak.

Rocky: Are they friendly spirits?

Bullwinkle: Just listen.
