the story of how Zazie's Pop got popped!

ok, so I am watching this on Turner Classics, supposedly unedited, or censured and in subtitles (the word A$$Hole is clearly displayed) but, when Zazie explains the events of how one day her father was drunk when she came home, the subtiltes stop, and the French audio is played backwards! And it would appear she is trying to describe being molested by her drunk fasther, her mother, already aware of this, caught him, and killed him, and was not tried for any crime.

Now, I just wondered if this subject matter was removed for regional distribution of a new DVD release, or what?!? Or has it always been edited this way?

It does seem that while she explains the story, the listener is distracted completely and almost oblivious to her story. So it may have been just an artful way the film-maker was presenting this scene. But maybe his distraction, while she is telling this horrible account(un-edited), is an attempt to imply how self-absorbed the listener is. But it's humor was lost on American censors???

Any one clear this up?

All the versions I know leave us in the dark about what exactly her father did, and I suppose this was done on purpose.

Yes, it quite an obvious gag isn't it? All the women gathering outside and all...

It also allows you to divert more attention to the man fumbling around with his lapels and so on, keeping the speech sound at the same intensity and volume while removing any meaning from it. Quite literally "blah blah blah".

I thought it was very clever!

I reversed the dialog in a sound program! It just repeats what she has already said, but in reverse.
So alas! it's just another tool in Malle's relentless audio visual barrage!

Ok that never even crossed my mind. I just took it as a joke.
